A new tool for an emerging diagnostic challenge

Copan is proud to announce the release of LBM® CABroth™, a selective enrichment broth designed for Candida auris, one of the most urgent emerging fungal pathogens in healthcare today.

As C. auris continues to challenge healthcare facilities worldwide, laboratories need workflow solutions that support reliable recovery, targeted enrichment, and faster, more flexible downstream testing.

LBM® CABroth™ was developed to help meet that need by selectively enriching Candida auris while helping inhibit other Candida species and commensal bacteria, improving workflows that support surveillance and healthcare-associated infection control efforts.

Introducing LBM® CABroth™

LBM® CABroth™, or Candida auris Broth, is Copan’s newly released selective enrichment broth for C. auris. It is formulated to promote growth of the target organism while helping suppress microbial contaminants that may compete with recovery.

LBM® CABroth™ is designed for use after specimen collection and before downstream analysis. After incubation, enriched specimens can be subcultured on appropriate agar media or used with compatible molecular detection workflows, giving laboratories flexibility in how they continue testing.

Designed to enhance recovery in 48 hours

LBM® CABroth™ supports selective enrichment of Candida auris in 48 hours of incubation at 35–40 °C. This enrichment step is especially important when organism burden may be low or when competing flora may interfere with detection.

By increasing the target microorganism load while helping inhibit other Candida species and commensal bacteria, LBM® CABroth™ is designed to help laboratories reduce the risk of missing a positive case and support more confident downstream analysis.

Built for culture and compatible molecular workflows

One of the key advantages of LBM® CABroth™ is workflow flexibility. Once the enrichment step is complete, laboratories can process the enriched specimen for subculture on appropriate agar media or use it with compatible molecular assays.

This makes LBM® CABroth™ a practical solution for laboratories using culture-based workflows, molecular-based workflows, or integrated approaches that combine enrichment, culture, and molecular detection. Use with diagnostic kits, assays, or instrumentation should be validated by the laboratory according to internal procedures.

Ready to use, prealiquoted, and laboratory friendly

LBM® CABroth™ is supplied as a ready-to-use, prealiquoted medium in a single tube format, helping reduce preparation time and minimize unnecessary material waste. Each tube contains 2 mL of modified Sabouraud medium and is designed for routine laboratory handling.

The product is transported and stored at 5–25 °C, helping simplify inventory management without adding unnecessary cold-storage burden. CABroth’s ready-to-use format also supports more standardized processing across users, shifts, and workflows.

Compatible with Copan collection and automation workflows

LBM® CABroth™ is designed for clinical specimens collected with Copan eSwab® or compatible Copan FLOQSwabs®. For specimens collected in eSwab®, the specimen can be vortexed and an aliquot transferred into LBM® CABroth™ according to the product instructions and laboratory procedures.

LBM® CABroth™ is also designed to fit within Copan’s automated microbiology ecosystem. Its tube format supports processing with WASP® and WASPLab® when used with the required broth module, helping laboratories extend automation into selective enrichment workflows.

For laboratories already investing in automation, LBM® CABroth™ offers a way to bring targeted Candida auris enrichment into a more standardized, efficient process.

Supporting the broader LBM® Enrichment Broths portfolio

LBM® CABroth™ joins Copan’s growing LBM® Enrichment and Selective Broths line, which includes ready-to-use media designed for a range of microbiology enrichment applications. The portfolio supports workflows for fastidious bacteria, anaerobic organisms, Group B Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, Shigella, enteric Gram-negative organisms, and now Candida auris.

With CABroth, the line expands to address one of today’s most pressing fungal diagnostic challenges, giving laboratories a selective enrichment option specifically designed for C. auris recovery.

A practical step forward for Candida auris surveillance

Effective Candida auris detection and surveillance depend on the right combination of collection, enrichment, identification, and downstream testing. LBM® CABroth™ was developed to support that process by giving laboratories a selective enrichment medium designed around the growth and detection challenges of C. auris.

By helping enrich the target organism, inhibit competing flora, support culture or compatible molecular workflows, and align with automation, LBM® CABroth™ gives laboratories a practical new tool for Candida auris detection and surveillance programs.

Frequently asked questions

A few common questions about LBM® CABroth™. See the full list on the CABroth™ FAQ page.

What is CABroth?

LBM® CABroth™ is Copan’s selective enrichment broth for Candida auris. It is designed to promote targeted enrichment of C. auris from clinical specimens while helping suppress other Candida species and commensal bacteria.

Why is selective enrichment important for Candida auris?

C. auris can be difficult to detect because colonized individuals may carry low fungal loads, it is slow to grow, and competing microbial flora can interfere and prolong recovery with standard culture workflows. Selective enrichment helps increase the target organism load while reducing non-target overgrowth and shortens time to recovery.

How long does LBM® CABroth™ incubation take?

LBM® CABroth™ is incubated for 48 hours at 35–40 °C, preferably at 40 °C, according to product instructions.

What specimen collection devices are compatible with CABroth?

LBM® CABroth™ is designed for clinical specimens collected with Copan eSwab® or compatible Copan FLOQSwabs®. Refer to the product instructions and laboratory procedures for proper collection and transfer.

Is LBM® CABroth™ compatible with automation?

Yes. LBM® CABroth™ is designed to support automated processing with WASP® and WASPLab®. A broth module is required.
