A new study in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology compared the performance of ESwab™ with traditional Amies transport swabs and found Copan ESwab™ was superior to Amies at all temperatures evaluated but especially at room temperature conditions (21°C and 24°C).

This week Copan launched videos demonstrating proper sample collection technique for respiratory samples. The new videos were created for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and The Joint Commission to be used in a web based course on influenza diagnosis and treatment in ambulatory settings for healthcare providers. The educational videos show proper technique for collecting respiratory specimens for influenza using swabs, aspirates and washes.

In the September, 2011 Journal of Clinical Microbiology, COPAN’s flocked swabs were cited as an important advance in testing for respiratory viruses. The JCM article “Current Best Practices for Respiratory Virus Testing” by Christine Ginocchio and Alexander MacAdam considers current issues in diagnostic testing for respiratory viruses including best methods for detection, sample handling and testing for antiviral resistance. The goal of the discussion, by the authors and the working group which contributed to the article, was to come to a consensus on the best practices for respiratory virus testing and to raise questions for further consideration.

COPAN announced that it has received the Chinese patent for its invention of flocked swabs, FLOQSwabs™, for collection and transfer of biological samples. The Chinese flocked swabs patent is the latest addition to a growing number of patents held by COPAN across the world for the use of flocked swabs for collection and transfer of biological samples, including a European patent that covers several countries (N°1608268), an Australian patent (N°2004226798), a Canadian patent (N°2515205), a Japanese patent (2007-523663) and New Zealand patent (N°541560).

JCM Study Demonstrates ESwab™ is Superior for Group B Strep >
The performances of the ESwab™ and Amies transport media were evaluated for optimal survival of group B streptococcus (GBS) in StrepB carrot broth. ESwab™ was superior to Amies at all temperatures evaluated but was optimal at 21°C and 24°C, whereas recovery in Amies was significantly decreased at these temperatures.
